A big change is coming for the former Dallas Morning News building in downtown Dallas. Businessman Ray Washburne, who originally planned to turn it into an entertainment district with a hotel and restaurants, has instead decided to sell it to a data company that will convert it into a data center.

Washburne, known for owning Mi Cocina and Highland Park Village, bought the property in 2019 for $28 million. His original plan included a 200- to 300-room boutique hotel, restaurants, and possibly even a live music venue. However, after years of delays and little support from the city, he has chosen to move on.

The buyer of the property remains unnamed, but Washburne says the company will preserve the original building while adding a new structure behind it. He had hoped to partner with the city on an entertainment district but was frustrated by a lack of communication from officials.

Meanwhile, Dallas City Hall is investing $3.5 billion in a new convention center, replacing the current one. Washburne says he spent millions on his project but couldn’t move forward without a clear plan from the city. Instead of waiting years for answers, he’s selling the property.
